In this painting, Vernon portrays the first pioneers to the valley as a Native American watches. Native Americans didn't have territorial claims in the valley. Different groups of natives would come and go through the area. Vernon puts himself in the perspective of the Native American in this painting. For the first time in his life he is seeing a covered wagon. The painting also features Mount Timpanogos in the background.
